George Malloch Jr., who served as a trustee of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation from 1990 to 2002, died on May 21 in Germany. A resident of Brookdale in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mr. Malloch was president of the foundation from 1997-1999.

'Day by the Bay' attracts large crowd to campus
Windy conditions on UCSC's East Field on Saturday required a venue change for UCSC's annual "Day by the Bay" picnic. But the 1,500 people who flocked to the Cowell College Courtyard for the annual event found plenty of activities to enjoy: food, beverages, college and department exhibits, and plenty of spectacular student entertainment. The alumni reunion weekend also featured a forum, a wine reception, and other events.

Destiny and development in the Mayan tradition of midwifery
Barbara Rogoff is accustomed to choosing what she will write about. But with her most recent book, "Developing Destinies: A Mayan Midwife and Town," the project chose her. The book is part memoir, part ethnography, part research study in child developmental psychology. It's also clearly a labor of love.

Governor's budget announcement
Gov. Jerry Brown today announced a budget plan that, if approved by the Legislature, would slash public spending by $12.5 billion. The governor's proposed budget includes a cut of $500 million from the University of California's budget, as well as a cut of $500 million from the California State University system. Natural gas outage affects some colleges, other areas of campus
At approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, campus crews shut down a natural gas line that serves a large area of the campus core. This action was taken in response to a report and confirmation of a leak in a low-pressure line at the intersection of McLaughlin Drive and Chinquapin Road. Campus crews are on site.
