In Memoriam—William Shipley

Bill Shipley, with studentWilliam Shipley, one of the first faculty hired at UC Santa Cruz, died January 20. Shipley came to UCSC in 1966 to found the linguistics program, which he led as chair until 1980.

"[Bill] helped me develop a deep interest in and love for the subject, and he also inculcated in me a respect for the complexity and richness of the American Indian languages," said UCSC alumnus John Rickford, a professor of linguistics at Stanford University.

The Linguistics Department has published a tribute web site in Bill Shipley's honor.
