A series of 10 backpack thefts from dining halls and the East Field House has occurred over the past two weeks. Many of backpacks contained laptops, wallets and other valuables. The crimes occurred during the busy lunch and dinner time hours.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the UC Santa Cruz Police Department at 831-459-2231. Reports may also be made anonymously by calling 831-459-3TIP (459-3847) or submitted online via http://www2.ucsc.edu/police/crime.html.

Keep Your Property Safe
Keep your backpack in your room when eating in the dining halls. Racks or unlocked cubbyholes are not a secure location for your valuables.
If you need to bring your backpack to the dining hall, keep it in sight at all times, or arrange for a friend to watch it.
Engrave your property with your driver license number.  In the event it is stolen, it can be more easily tracked back to you.
Keep records of serial numbers.  If your property is stolen and you have the serial number, police can enter the information into a national computer database.
Never leave your valuables unattended anywhere on campus, even it is only just for a moment, it only takes a thief a few seconds to steal a backpack or wallet.
Most theft of property crimes occur because opportunity exists.  Take time to prevent crime.  Predictable is usually preventable.
