Message about unsanctioned '4/20' event

To: UCSC Student Community

From: Felicia McGinty, Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs

Dear Students:

I am writing to advise you about a non-University sanctioned event next week, “4/20” or “Four-Twenty.” As you are probably aware, 4/20 activities create a variety of challenges for everyone in the campus community. The unwelcome event diminishes UCSC’s reputation and brings unwanted negative attention to the campus.

Your safety is our priority as well as the need to continue regular University business. To help minimize the disruption of 4/20, please remember the no overnight guest policy in on-campus residences will be in effect Tuesday, April 19 through Thursday, April 21. You should also expect traffic delays and different bus and shuttle schedules next Wednesday afternoon and also strict parking enforcement. For more information on transportation issues, go to the Transportation & Parking Services Web site.

This notification is being provided to help you plan for April 20 and make positive choices about your time. UCSC continues to educate students about the risks of alcohol and drug use, provide alternative activities, and enforce University policies. Ultimately, events like 4/20 are shaped by the individual choices and behaviors of community members. I encourage you to engage with your peers, other campus community members, and Student Affairs staff about these issues. We can support you in planning and participating in alternative activities that highlight your accomplishments as scholars and engaged world citizens.
