UC Santa Cruz is inviting nominations for the 2012 Tony Hill Memorial Award.
Tony Hill was a beloved community leader and mentor whose gifts as a mediator promoted the causes of justice and equality. After his death in 2007, the campus joined with his family to establish this award to honor his legacy.
Presentation of the Tony Hill Memorial Award is a highlight of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation, which will take place on February 2, 2012, at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
Hill was a tireless volunteer who served on the convocation planning committee for many years.
The award recognizes an individual whose work and actions exemplify Hill's commitment to the community and to social justice. The 2011 award recipient was the Rev. Deborah Johnson, founding minister and president of Inner Light Ministries. Previous recipients include California State Assemblymember Luis Alejo and Santa Cruz Mayor Ryan Coonerty, a co-founder of Nextspace.
