This week we are preparing to welcome more than 7,000 residential students to our community. University Housing will open their doors for occupancy beginning Wednesday, September 14, and student move-in will continue through Sunday, September 18.
This is an exciting period for our students and their families, and an excellent opportunity for us to welcome them to our University and community.
However, residential Move-in has impacts on campus parking and traffic and we ask for your patience and flexibility. It is important to note the following restrictions and alternative parking options:
Lots Restricted to Move-In Parking Permits only:
- Most of the parking lots near our ten colleges on campus.
- All three Remote lots.
Vehicles without a Move-In permit parked in restricted lots will be cited.
Because of this restriction, Staff and Students with A, B, or R permits may need to find alternative parking for Thursday or Friday.
Wednesday 14 September:
- Move-In activities will only take place in the area near Porter College.
- Some Move-In parking will be allowed in the Performing Arts lot, but won't be restricted solely for Move-In activities.
Wednesday – Saturday:
- One-way traffic controls will be in place on Porter-Kresge Road.
Thursday – Sunday:
- Hagar Drive between McLaughlin and Steinhart will accommodate northbound traffic only.
Please check these day-specific maps for nearby non-restricted parking options:
- Thursday, September 15: http://taps.ucsc.edu/pdf/9-15-11restrictedlots.pdf
- Friday, September 16: http://taps.ucsc.edu/pdf/9-16-11restrictedlots.pdf
- Saturday, September 17: http://taps.ucsc.edu/pdf/9-17-11restrictedlots.pdf
- Sunday, September 18: http://taps.ucsc.edu/pdf/9-18-11restrictedlots.pdf
We anticipate thousands of additional vehicles on campus for the move-in period which creates a significant challenge for the campus community. Principal officers and managers are encouraged to consider alternative work sites for staff members if operationally feasible, and at the discretion of the supervisor.
Those with R parking permits will be able to park in the East Remote overflow lots during Move In activities (September 14–18, 2011). Beginning Monday, September 19th, cars parked in these overflow lots can be moved back to any of the three campus Remote lots (East Remote, West Remote, or North Perimeter). All vehicles must be removed from the overflow lots by Friday, September 30th or they will be cited by Campus Police.
A one-page map showing the overflow lots can be found at http://taps.ucsc.edu.
We strongly encourage the use of alternative transportation options to get to campus (such as sharing a ride with a friend or colleague) to help accommodate the new student traffic.
If you have questions about these changes to parking and traffic flow, please contact Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) at 459-2190 or taps@ucsc.edu. Thank you in advance for helping to support a smooth start to the new academic year.
