UC Santa Cruz will host its second annual Day by the Bay celebration on Saturday, April 30. Part of the campus's alumni reunion weekend, Day by the Bay will feature a morning forum, a lunchtime picnic, and a host of other activities.
In addition to alumni, students, and parents of students, UCSC is inviting members of the local community to campus to enjoy the weekend's events, many of which are free of charge.

Intellectual Forum
11 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Humanities Lecture Hall
"Game Changers: Green Chemistry and Social Change Philanthropy"
Kimberly Lau, provost at UCSC's Oakes College, will moderate a discussion between UCSC alumni who are creating major paradigm shifts in our collective approach to meeting social, environmental, and economic challenges.
Featured speakers are:
- Drummond Pike (UCSC's Stevenson College '70) founder of Tides and cofounder of Working Assets
- Michael Wilson (UCSC's Stevenson College ’84) research scientist and pioneer in the emerging field of "green" chemistry

Day by the Bay Picnic
12–3 p.m., UCSC's East Field
Free community picnic features delicious local food, microbrews, and wine. Robotics displays, displays from UCSC's 10 colleges, and student entertainment is planned; fun activities for children (including a bounce house and climbing wall) are also part of the picnic.
All Alumni Wine Reception
Cowell Provost House Lawn, 3–4:30 p.m.
This event is a celebration of UCSC alumni. Reconnect with old classmates and faculty and meet new friends.

Reconnect with fellow alumni and your favorite faculty and staff for a night of mingling and memories to celebrate the last 40 years.

Writers Life: A celebration of writing at UC Santa CruzHumanities Lecture Hall and Plaza, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
UCSC's Humanities Division is hosting an all-day series of seminars with a selection of alumni writers–novelists, journalists, and screenwriters–coming together to focus on the joys and challenges of writing as a living, the business of writing, and trends for the future.
The day begins with a keynote speech by alumnus David Talbot, founder of Salon.com. Other writers participating are Susan Blackaby, David Ehrman, Charlie Haas, Robert Irion, Laurie King, Dan Pulcrano, Matt Skenazy, and Gary Young. Please register for this free event on the Day by the Bay web site.
