Updates about our athletics program

As you know, students in May approved a referendum that will provide much-needed funding for our NCAA Division III athletics program. Had it not passed, I would have faced a truly difficult decision: whether to continue to fund intercollegiate athletics on campus.

Campus Solutions and MyUCSC will be merged July 10

Major improvements to Campus Solutions and MyUCSC will be implemented over the July 8 weekend. MyUCSC will be merged with Campus Solutions, the system administrative offices use to support campus functions like enrollment, billing and admissions. The consolidated system will retain the MyUCSC name and branding, and get a complete navigation redesign.

Update on state law prohibiting state-funded travel to certain states

On Sept. 27, 2016, Gov. Brown signed into law AB 1887, which became effective Jan. 1, 2017. This law prohibits state-funded travel to a state that has passed a law after June 26, 2015 that (1) authorizes discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identify, and gender expression, or (2) voids or repeals existing state or local protections against such discrimination.

Pay for Performance Update

This is an update on our ongoing Pay for Performance program. As SHR has communicated previously, our UC Santa Cruz pay and performance programs are part of UC-wide initiatives. Creating a safe campus culture

UC Santa Cruz has seen a dramatic uptick in reports of sexual violence and sexual harassment (SVSH) over the past few years. While only 85 reports were received during the 2013-14 academic year, that number jumped to 181 in 2014-15, 233 in 2015-16, and we are on track to receive approximately 375 reports this year.

As all of you hopefully know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. ITS Service Announcement: Canvas at UCSC is now available

The new UCSC Learning Management System, Canvas, is now available. Faculty who are teaching in spring may log in and begin adding content to their pre-created course shells. Faculty who wish to work on courses for future quarters or experiment with Canvas can request a test course.

Report of sexual assault allegations against former faculty member

As soon as these allegations were reported, the campus acted swiftly to address the victim’s claims, which appeared to be clear violations of the UC Santa Cruz policy on sexual violence and sexual harassment.

A reimagined Science and Engineering Library

By Herbert Lee, Interim Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor — Saws are whirring on an innovative project to reshape undergraduate science education. Construction crews are converting the Science & Engineering Library’s S.H. Cowell Room into a 99-seat active learning classroom. The classroom, a first of its kind for our campus, is set to open next fall and is a significant first step in a multi-phased renovation for this library.

Your best protection against the flu is to get a flu shot. Students can get a flu shot at the Student Health Center pharmacy or at a pharmacy downtown. Faculty and staff should get their flu shot from their private provider or at an off campus pharmacy.
