“Flyer Literacy” event postponed until fall

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Martin Berger, Acting VPAA and Campus Diversity Officer for Faculty Teresa Maria Linda Scholz, Campus Diversity Officer for Staff and Students

Dear UCSC Campus Community,

We are sending this message to inform you that the “Flyer Literacy” event, scheduled for Monday, May 15, is postponed until the fall quarter.

This event was organized to give the campus community an opportunity to discuss the impact of recent flyers posted across campus. Subsequently, we received multiple communications indicating a greater than anticipated interest in attending the event. Furthermore, we received multiple messages posted on social media that were disturbing.

Given the importance we place on providing a space where experiences and perspectives are voiced freely, we are postponing the event to give the campus sufficient time to plan and secure a venue that will accommodate a large and diverse audience. For updates on our events, please see diversity.ucsc.edu.

For students who need to talk about campus climate issues related to the flyers, we will host office hours, which will be announced soon through the colleges.

Please know that we remain invested in hearing your concerns to inform a stronger UC Santa Cruz community.

All our best,

Martin Berger, Acting VPAA and Campus Diversity Officer for Faculty
Teresa Maria Linda Scholz, Campus Diversity Officer for Staff and Students
