I’d like to offer a warm welcome to Marlene Tromp, who today officially joins us as campus provost/executive vice chancellor.
I very much look forward to working with Marlene to move this campus forward, pursuing programs and projects that will foster our core mission of teaching, research, and public service. In all of our conversations, Marlene’s commitment to excellence has really stood out. She understands and appreciates the culture of UC Santa Cruz, but also brings experiences and ideas from other educational circles that will serve us well.
She comes to us from Arizona State University’s West Campus, where she was vice provost and a professor of English and women and gender studies. She has a track record of working closely with faculty, staff and students, advocating on their behalf within the larger ASU system.
As a first-generation college graduate, she appreciates the challenges facing students who are the first in their family to pursue a four-year degree. That’s vital experience for us, as low-income and first-generation students are applying to our campus in record numbers. You can read more about Marlene’s background in our initial announcement when she was appointed.
Finally, I believe you’ll find Marlene’s energy and enthusiasm infectious. I think she’s a wonderful fit for our campus.
