Message on Charlottesville violence

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Chancellor George Blumenthal and Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor Marlene Tromp

Redwoods

The horrific events that unfolded in Charlottesville this weekend remind us that we must be vigilant in our fight against all who promulgate hate and violence based on race, faith, sexual orientation or personal belief. Silence is complicity.

As a university we denounce the abhorrent ideology of white supremacy and white nationalism that haunts communities nationwide, and we send our thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of those who were killed and injured.

Our country's great strength stems from its diversity, from the contributions of people of all colors, creeds and cultures. We must celebrate our differences, and without hesitancy reject any expression of intolerance, bigotry or hatred that runs counter to the American ideal that we are all equals.

Message on Charlottesville from campus diversity officers.
