Weather and traffic advisory for this weekend

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Public Affairs

The National Weather Service is warning of a heat wave in the days ahead with temperatures peaking on Saturday.

Because of a high-pressure zone over our region, higher-than-normal and even excessive heat conditions are expected.

Also, beginning on Friday, Caltrans is anticipating increased traffic into Santa Cruz County on Highway 17.

When combined with commencement weekend, there is an increased likelihood of significant delays traveling to the Santa Cruz area. Drivers could experience delays exceeding one hour in high heat conditions coming from San Jose.

The Office of Emergency Services, the UC Santa Cruz Police Department, and the Commencement Event Committee are advising students and their family members to allow for increased travel time to get to UC Santa Cruz. In addition, please take appropriate precautions when outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible, and stay hydrated to prevent heat injury.
