The 11th annual Bike-to-Work/School Day takes place on Thursday, May 21, and a free breakfast awaits faculty, staff, and students who leave their cars behind when coming to the campus.
The bagels, coffee, fruit, and other treats that UCSC will serve at the Student Center from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. on May 21 are only a small taste of what’s taking place May 16 through 22 for Bike-to-Work Week.
Other events include:
Saturday, May 16:
- "Transportation Transformations", a Santa Cruz historical tour on bicycles. The three-hour, rolling historical tour and bring-your-own picnic starts at the HUB for Sustainable Transportation, 2048 N. Pacific Avenue at 10 a.m. Free. Helmets are required for all participants.
Sunday, May 17:
- "The Ultimate Commute: Vacationing by Bike". Sarah Patek shares stories of her trek from Alaska to Argentina, and Richard Krebs speaks about his solo and tandem bicycle adventures. Starts at Sprockets at 1420 Mission Street at 6 p.m. Free. Refreshments provided.
- Strawberry Fields Forever VIII. A benefit ride for Global Cyclists Exchange. Rides of 100 miles, 100 kilometers, and 25 miles.
Monday, May 18:
- Women’s Bike Commute Tea. Women cyclists enjoy tea, pastries, and good company from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bicycle Trip, 1127 Soquel Avenue. Speakers will discuss a number of different cycling issues and interests. Free.
Wednesday, May 20:
- Bike-to-Market Day. Ride your bike to the Downtown Santa Cruz Farmer’s market at the corner of Lincoln and Cedar Streets and enter a drawing for free goodies. Valet bike parking provided. 2:30 to 6 p.m. Free.
- Food Delivery Day. Pedaler’s Express coordinates the delivery of food to each breakfast site via bicycle. Volunteers and trailers needed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Thursday, May 21:
- Bike-to-Work/School Day. Free breakfast at UCSC and other sites, including New Leaf Community Markets at Mission Street in Santa Cruz, 41st Avenue in Capitola, and in Felton; the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium; The Buttery at the corner of Soquel and Branciforte Avenues; Cabrillo College Amphitheater; the Clubhouse Scout Room at Harvey West Park; the Juice Club on Clares Street in Capitola; and at Twin Lakes Park at 7th Avenue and Murray Street in Live Oak. Also in Scotts Valley at Camp Evers Park on Glen Canyon Road, and in Watsonville at the Downtown Plaza, corner of Main and East Beach Streets.
Friday, May 22:
- Human-Powered Parade & Party. Anyone moving under their own power is invited to take part in the parade, which starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Front Street Pub. From 7 to 10 p.m., a party and fair for cyclists takes place at the pub, featuring live music, food, door prizes, bike safety and maintenance demonstrations, and environmental- and bike-related booths. Both events are free.
