Dear Campus Community,
Last week, the federal government began terminating the F-1 records of international students across the country in the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS). This action ends their authorization to stay in the United States, with no advance notice. Late in the week, we learned three UC Santa Cruz students had their records terminated. The federal government has not detailed the reasons behind these terminations. We have notified the three students and are in direct contact with them to provide support.
We recognize that recent federal immigration actions, whether locally, within the UC system, or across the country, may cause fear and grave concern for many in our campus community. We reiterate our strong support for all international students and scholars. UC Santa Cruz is enriched by the contributions of our international community members, and we are fortunate to research, teach, and learn with and from such outstanding students and scholars. UC Santa Cruz has campus support resources available to students, faculty, and staff.
We encourage international students to engage with our International Student Services and Programming office (ISSP) and visit the Immigration Guidance update page for current information. We encourage everyone to review the University of California’s “Know Your Rights” card, which provides an overview of legal protections to keep in mind if interacting with law enforcement, and to review this UC FAQ.
Our highest priority is the success and well-being of all members of our UC Santa Cruz community. We will continue to monitor and respond to various federal actions. We are here to support you.
