Dear UCSC faculty and staff:

The UC Office of the President (UCOP) has approved restoring access to Canvas for UCSC. Please keep in mind that this remains a fluid situation. While we are back online now, access may be temporarily suspended again over the next several days if additional security measures are required. This is part of the ongoing, nationwide work to ensure the platform is fully secure.

Protecting the integrity of your courses

The following steps are recommended to ensure your courses are functioning correctly and to prepare for potential service interruptions:

1. Verify Your Course Content

  • Review your course materials, assignments, and modules in Canvas to make sure everything appears correctly. While we do not expect there to be disruptions to the integrity of your materials, if you see  any issues, please immediately contact the ITS Service Desk.
  • Check your Canvas Course Settings: It is recommended that “Visibility” is set to “Course” (rather than “Public” or “Institution”).
  • Third-party tools including YuJa, Zoom, and integrated publisher texts are currently being reconnected. There may be a delay before they can be accessed; if you are prompted to reauthorize these or other third-party apps, please do so.

2. Prepare for Potential Disruptions. As a precaution, we recommend downloading key data so you can continue teaching if access is interrupted again:

If multiple individuals have access to course and grade materials on Canvas for an individual course, please coordinate with the instructor of record on the above actions to ensure student records and coursework are kept secure.

Security Reminder

Now that access is restored, please remain vigilant against suspicious or unexpected messages. As a reminder, the university will never ask you for your password, Social Security number, or financial information.

We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and flexibility during this nationwide Canvas security incident and are here to support you. If you have any questions, please reach out to ITS by opening an online support ticket, calling 831-459-4357, or posting on the TLC’s Slack space.
