Dear Campus Community,

It is with sadness that I share the news that Patricia “Pat” Rebele, a proud UC Santa Cruz alumna, dedicated philanthropist, and longtime advocate for the arts, education, and social justice, passed away Dec. 15 at the age of 96.

For more than four decades, Pat and her husband, the late Rowland Rebele, were extraordinary partners to our campus. Their generosity and thoughtful guidance helped advance programs that continue to shape the student experience and expand opportunities for research and creative expression. Pat’s connection to UC Santa Cruz was also personal: After earning her bachelor’s degree in art history here as a re-entry student, she remained deeply engaged in strengthening the arts on our campus and in the greater Santa Cruz community.

Together, the Rebeles established the Patricia and Rowland Rebele Endowed Chair in History of Art and Visual Culture, and made a transformative gift that helped launch our Institute of the Arts and Sciences. Their philanthropy also supported the University Library, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, the Arboretum, Arts & Lectures, UC Santa Cruz Opera, and many other programs. In recognition of their remarkable impact, they received our Fiat Lux Award in 2009.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to her children, Marianne, Andrew, and Chris, and to her extended family and many friends. Pat’s generosity, curiosity, and belief in the power of education will continue to be felt across our campus for generations.

Sincerely,
Cindy
