The Office of Equity and Equal Protection (EEP) is now stewarding the UC Systemwide Anti-Discrimination policy and manages all complaints of discrimination or harassment on the basis of protected characteristics for all community members, including students. To avoid duplication or confusion, the Bias Response reporting mechanism has been closed.
For the past several years, the Bias Response process or “Hate/Bias” has provided a reporting mechanism for students to submit complaints of discrimination and harassment. At the time of its creation, this system allowed multiple campus offices to triage reports and help students navigate to the right resource. Prior to February 2024, student complaints of discrimination and harassment were handled by the Bias Response process and employee complaints were handled by Equity and Equal Protection.
Supervisors, managers, HR and Academic Personnel administrators, faculty, deans, and department chairs are “Responsible Employees” and are required to report to the Equity and Equal Opportunity Office if they learn about discrimination, discriminatory harassment, or retaliation in the course of their employment. Report incidents using the online reporting form or by emailing equity@ucsc.edu. Additional information, answers to frequently asked questions about reporting, and a list of protected characteristics covered by the policy can be found in the Anti-Discrimination Policy.
Students experiencing conflict with other students that may be a policy violation NOT related to discrimination against protected characteristics should contact the Office of Student Conduct & Conflict Education by emailing conduct@ucsc.edu or by filling out the Public Incident Report form. Students who are seeking resources to help resolve other forms of conflict are encouraged to reach out to the Office of the Ombuds.
