Help welcome our students to campus: Volunteer for Fall Move-In

To: UCSC Campus Community

From: Laura Arroyo, Ed.D., Associate Vice Chancellor for Colleges, Housing and Educational Services

Hello everyone and happy “almost” Fall move-in!

My name is Laura Arroyo (she/her) and I recently joined UC Santa Cruz as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES).

Fall move-in is just around the corner and we would greatly appreciate your help in welcoming our newest Banana Slugs to campus!

Fall move-in is such an important time. It is the start of a new and exciting chapter, the mark of renewal, and a time for celebration. For many of our students, Fall move-in will be their first introduction to our campus and the ways that UC Santa Cruz is such a unique and special place. Beginnings matter for all of us, and I ask for you to join us on this journey together in community.

Move-in for new students will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 19, 20, 21, and 22. During that time, 5,700 new students will arrive on campus. To ensure each and every new student receives a warm UC Santa Cruz welcome, we need volunteers to greet and direct students as they arrive on campus.

Volunteer Tasks

  • Move-in Greeters - welcome students and help them find their way to check in.
  • Student Shirt Distributors - distribute shirts to all new residents during check-in.
  • Move-in Van Drivers - transport staff, students and their guests who need assistance getting to the colleges or other locations as needed. Drivers must be current UCSC employees and have a valid California Driver's License.

Volunteering for move-in is not only a fantastic opportunity to meet our new students and their families, it’s a fun way to support them as they begin their UC Santa Cruz journey. Having enough move-in volunteers is essential to creating a magical start for our students. We welcome and appreciate the support of the entire university community for joining us in this effort.

To volunteer for one or more shifts, please complete this form and select your preferred time slot (or slots!) before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17. The Move-In Team will be hosting a (optional) move-in volunteer training via Zoom at noon on Wednesday, September 18.  If you’re looking for a group activity for your department or team, we encourage you to sign up together. This is also a great opportunity to connect or reconnect with staff, faculty, Alumni, and Silver Slugs Retirees

We ask all volunteers to wear 2023 move-in or commencement volunteer shirts. If you don't own one, please feel free to wear a UCSC-branded shirt along with your name tag. Learn everything you need to know about volunteering on this webpage.

Here are some quick and interesting facts about our incoming first-year college students:

  • Most were born in 2006.
  • Google has always owned YouTube.
  • They are younger than Facebook.
  • The iTunes Music Store has always been a thing for them (Launched in 2003).
  • American Idol is just an old TV show for them. The show's first season was in 2002.
