Construction has started on the new campus childcare center and housing complex for students with families.
A small group of campus leaders, planning staffers and outside contractors involved with the project met at the project site at Hagar and Coolidge drives recently to mark the start of work. The expanded childcare facility will allow UC Santa Cruz to serve the children of students and employees, while the family-student housing complex is expected to accommodate around 330 people. Campus leaders have identified housing and childcare as critical campus needs, and have prioritized projects that address them.
Both the center and the 120-unit housing complex are expected to open in late 2025, which will then allow the campus to move forward on the second phase of the project. That includes additional on-campus housing for thousands of students at the current site of Family Student Housing on Heller Drive. Campus leaders are seeking to provide more than 40 percent more student housing by 2030, and this project keeps the university on a trajectory to achieve that.
