The world has lost a great champion of math and scientific research with the death of Jim Simons, an award-winning mathematician, quantitative-investing legend, and inspired philanthropist.
Simons co-founded the Simons Foundation three decades ago alongside his wife, Marilyn. In the ensuing years, the foundation has distributed billions of dollars to hundreds of philanthropic causes, particularly those supporting math and science research and education — areas that Simons was passionate about. Simons Foundation-funded work has been credited for breakthroughs in our understanding of autism, the origins of the universe, cellular biology and computational science. Our campus has been among the foundation’s many beneficiaries, and we are deeply grateful for their support. Simon Foundation grants to our campus have funded important work in ocean sciences, mathematics, and astronomy and astrophysics.
Through his talents, insight and generosity, Jim Simons made transformative contributions to science and society. His foresight to establish the foundation ensures that more scientific advances are to come. That is a legacy to celebrate.
