Dear Campus Community,
This is a time of anguish, for the world and for our campus community. The brutal terrorist attacks by Hamas against innocent civilians in Israel, followed by the devastating Israeli airstrikes and now ground operation in Gaza, have led to a staggering loss of Israeli and Palestinian life, immense suffering by children, families, and other civilians, and a sharp rise in tensions across the Middle East. Most immediately, we add our individual voices to calls for the release of hostages taken by Hamas and for the urgently needed humanitarian relief for Gaza residents, many of whom are without adequate food, water, electricity, and medicine. We continue to express our grief for the victims of violence. Human life is fragile. It must be honored, and we must do all we can to protect it.
Many in our campus community have been directly affected by these events. We share their mourning for the loss of life and their anxieties for the future of the region. We have also heard from those who care deeply that our students, faculty, and staff – from all faith backgrounds, and with roots everywhere in the world – are safe and feel supported. The passions with which people feel and express their beliefs and positions can present challenges to the perceived safety, physical and psychological, of those who disagree. We must always maintain our fundamental care and respect for each other, at the base of which lies a recognition of our common humanity.
Belonging to an academic community is a privilege. It comes with rights and opportunities, responsibilities and obligations. Universities are places where ideas, and the people who express those ideas, exchange and test their views in dialogue with each other. The ethos of the university encourages discussions carried out in a manner that is respectful, centered on listening to contrary views, and seeking understanding even when there is no agreement. This vigorous exchange of ideas is backed by disciplinary expertise and a fierce commitment to truth and accuracy. Faculty have academic freedom to explore ideas, where that exploration is guided by professional and scholarly expertise. Academic freedom is a foundational value of the university, one to be defended. Freedom of expression is also part of our bedrock, backed by constitutional rights. With academic freedom and free speech, universities are ideally situated to foster deeper understanding of complex issues and to support constructive debate.
We talk a great deal about civil, informed discussion on difficult issues. In times like these, we must live up to the responsibilities of not only engaging in that debate, but also speaking and truly listening to each other. As a community, we share a collective responsibility to be sensitive to the environment we create for others when we engage in that debate, particularly on difficult and painful topics. At a minimum, we should give attention and care to the possible impacts of the ways we engage in debate on those with whom we disagree. Members of our community may stake out uncomfortable and upsetting positions and we must ensure that those who disagree are allowed to speak and be heard. But we must also consider impacts on the broader community that go beyond and exist alongside those disagreements. We must ask ourselves, as a community with shared principles, how we will attend to, engage with, and take responsibility for the well-being of our community, even as we reserve and respect the right to disagree.
We have been heartened by the care that many in our campus community have taken with one another since this conflict began. Due to the mutual respect and community values of our students, faculty members, and staff, we have mourned and marched in ways that reflect the sacred value of human life, the high regard we have for the right to free speech of our community members, and the foundational commitment to sustain an educational environment in which people may disagree while maintaining an ethic of care.
The days to come will continue to be difficult, and we hope we all can continue to search for common ground, strive for respectful dialogue, and seek support from friends, family, and the campus community.

Estimada Comunidad del Campus:
Este es un momento de angustia, para el mundo y para nuestra comunidad del campus. Los brutales ataques terroristas por parte de Hamas contra civiles inocentes en Israel, seguidos por los devastadores ataques aéreos israelíes y ahora la operación terrestre en Gaza, han traído asombrosas pérdidas de vidas israelíes y palestinas, sufrimientos inmensos para niños, familias y otros civiles, y un drástico aumento de tensiones por todo el Oriente Medio. Por ser lo más apremiante, hemos unido nuestras voces individuales al llamado de liberar a los rehenes capturados por Hamas y de propiciar la ayuda humanitaria con urgencia necesitada por los residentes de Gaza, muchos de los cuales se hallan privados de alimentos, agua, electricidad y medicamentos necesarios. Continuamos expresando nuestro dolor por las víctimas de la violencia. La vida humana es frágil. Debemos honrarla, y debemos hacer todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance por protegerla.
Son muchos en nuestra comunidad del campus los que se han visto directamente afectados por esos acontecimientos. Compartimos su luto por la pérdida de vidas y sus ansiedades de cara al futuro de la región. También hemos escuchado a quienes simpatizan profundamente con nuestros estudiantes, y miembros de la facultad y del personal – de todas las denominaciones de culto, y con raíces en todas partes del mundo – para hacerlos sentir seguros y respaldados. Las pasiones con las que las personas sienten y expresan sus creencias y posiciones pueden presentar retos a las formas en que se percibe la seguridad, física y sicológica, de aquellos que discrepan. Siempre debemos mantener nuestra atención y respeto hacia el prójimo, como base del reconocimiento de nuestra humanidad en común.
Pertenecer a una comunidad académica es un privilegio. Es algo que conlleva derechos y oportunidades, así como responsabilidades y obligaciones. Las universidades son lugares donde las ideas, y la gente que expresa esas ideas, intercambian y ponen a prueba sus puntos de vista al dialogar entre ellos. El ethos de la universidad alienta el debate llevado a cabo de forma respetuosa, centrándose en escuchar los puntos de vista contrarios, y procurando entenderse, aún cuando no se llegue a un acuerdo. Este vigoroso intercambio de ideas está avalado por la pericia disciplinaria y un firme compromiso con la verdad y la precisión. La facultad dispone de libertad académica para explorar ideas, en cuanto a que dicha exploración esté guiada por la pericia y la erudición profesionales. La libertad académica es un valor fundacional de la universidad, un valor que hay que defender. Con la libertad académica y la libertad de expresión, las universidades se hallan idealmente situadas para fomentar una comprensión más profunda de cuestiones complejas y para brindar apoyo al debate constructivo.
Hablamos mucho acerca del debate cívico e informado sobre cuestiones difíciles. En tiempos como estos, debemos ponernos a la altura de las responsabilidades no solo de entablar ese debate, sino también de hablar y de verdaderamente escucharnos unos a otros. Como comunidad, compartimos una responsabilidad colectiva de ser sensibles al ambiente que creamos para la otra parte cuando nos enfrascamos en tal discusión, y muy en particular si se trata de asuntos tan difíciles y delicados. Como mínimo, debemos prestar atención y cuidado a los posibles impactos de las formas en que debatimos con aquellos con quienes no estamos de acuerdo. Los miembros de nuestra comunidad pueden plantear posiciones incómodas y molestas y debemos asegurar que se les deje hablar y se les debe escuchar. Pero también debemos considerar los impactos a una comunidad más amplia que se extiende más allá de esos desacuerdos y que debe coexistir con ellos. Debemos preguntarnos a nosotros mismos, siendo una comunidad en la que compartimos principios, cómo prestar atención e interactuar con otros, y asumir responsabilidad del bienestar de nuestra comunidad, aún cuando nos reservemos y respetemos el derecho a discrepar.
Nos ha dado aliento el cuidado que muchos de nuestra comunidad del campus se han prestado entre sí desde el comienzo de este conflicto. Gracias al respeto mutuo y valores comunitarios de nuestros estudiantes, miembros de la facultad y del personal, hemos llorado y marchado en formas que reflejan el sagrado valor de la vida humana, la alta consideración que tenemos al derecho a la libertad de expresión de nuestros miembros de la comunidad, y al compromiso fundacional de mantener un ambiente docente en el que muchas personas pueden discrepar sin dejar de mantener una ética de cuidado.
Los días venideros continuarán siendo difíciles, y tenemos la esperanza de que todos podremos continuar la búsqueda de un terreno común, esforzándonos por sobrellevar un diálogo respetuoso, y buscar el apoyo de los amigos, familiares y la comunidad del campus.
