Julie Lewis has been named UC Santa Cruz’s new Title IX director. She started her role on August 21, 2023.
“Julie is deeply committed to the work of sexual assault and harassment prevention and anti-discrimination,” said Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff Ann Finn who oversees the Equity and Equal Protection Office. “Her years of experience in and dedication to Title IX efforts will strengthen UCSC’s support for our community.”
Title IX, part of the Education Amendments of 1972, is a comprehensive federal law prohibiting gender or sex-based discrimination in any federally funded education program or activity. The campus office works to prevent discrimination and harassment and remedy and prevent future harm. It also responds to reports of misconduct.
Lewis comes to UCSC from the UC Office of the President where she was the system-wide Title IX director. She served as associate director and deputy Title IX coordinator at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and Cal State University, Stanislaus, and has represented school districts, school boards, universities and municipalities in various legal roles.
Lewis received a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Northwestern University.
