HSI Leadership team welcomes campus to fall quarter; encourages participation in upcoming signature events

On the heels of celebrating National HSI Week last week and kicking off Latinx Heritage month on Friday, September 15, members of the HSI Leadership team wish to extend all Banana Slugs a warm, fall welcome. The message highlights key resources for students and invites the campus community to participate in upcoming fall quarter events. Watch the video to learn more and meet members of the HSI Leadership team.

National HSI Week ran from September 11 - 17 and offered the opportunity to celebrate all that it means for UCSC to be a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Throughout the week, the HSI Initiatives team shared a great deal of information and resources through their social media accounts. The week culminated in Cafe con Pan with faculty and staff!

The end of National HSI Week also marked the beginning of Latinx Heritage month, which continues through October 15. The campus community is encouraged to follow both the El Centro: Chicanx and Latinx Resource Center and HSI Initiatives instagram accounts for more updates and information about events pertaining to campus’ recognition and celebration of Latinx Heritage month.

Hola Banana Slugs! We are so excited to welcome you into a new academic year!

At UCSC estamos muy orgullosos! We are so proud to be a Hispanic-Serving Institution as we strive to support and empower our community of undergraduate, transfer, and graduate Latinx students, families, faculty, and staff.

For us, being an HSI means:

  • Being intentional and meeting students where they are at
  • Being race-conscious
  • Building meaningful relationships with students and their families
  • Developing the talents and potential that students bring; and
  • Honoring students’ strengths and funds of knowledge

Our Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives team is looking forward to meeting many of you at the upcoming events that we have prepared with all of you in mind and in collaboration with several campus partners such as the Chicanx/Latinx Resource Center known as “El Centro.”

This fall quarter we invite you to join us for events like:

  • Pan Dulce Fridays happening almost every other Friday throughout the quarter. Come build community and enjoy coffee and pan dulce on us!
  • Plática with the authors of The Latinx Guide to Graduate School who will help us demystify the path to graduate school and share survival tips in navigating academia as a Latinx student.
  • The film screening of Strawberry Picker, a short documentary featuring local artist, Juan Fuentes, and a leaf printing workshop led by him.
  • And our HSI Equity Talks at which invited guests will unpack Servingness practices, bringing us valued perspective and engaging us in conversation.

As you embark on this new quarter, we encourage you to utilize services supported by HSI like large group tutoring through Learning Support Services and the GANAS Graduate Services Counselor.

Or to consider HSI Initiatives employment opportunities, such as the Cultivamos Excelencia Research Scholars Program.

We invite you to stop by our HSI Modular Office located at Trailer #2 in the Upper East Field to say hello and use the lobby space to study.

We wish you the best of luck this quarter! Follow us on instagram @ucsc.hsi to keep up with future events and opportunities such as internships, jobs, and scholarships; and check out our website: hsi.ucsc.edu to learn more about our HSI Initiatives.

Muchas gracias y buena suerte! 🙂

We are HSI!
