Dear Campus Community,
I am excited to welcome Bryan Gaensler to UC Santa Cruz as our new Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences. His first day was August 15.
Gaensler comes to UC Santa Cruz from the University of Toronto, where he has been director of the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, a professor in the David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and a Canada Research Chair in Radio Astronomy. He is known for his research on cosmic magnetism, interstellar gas and cosmic explosions. Gaensler has served as the Canadian Science Director for the Square Kilometre Array, an international radio telescope project, and was also co-chair of the Toronto Initiative for Diversity and Excellence (TIDE).
Gaensler received his Ph.D. from the University of Sydney and held positions at MIT, the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard University, and the University of Sydney, before joining the University of Toronto in 2015. He has published more than 430 research papers and is the author of a best-selling popular astronomy book, Extreme Cosmos, which has been translated into five languages.
