With improving weather conditions, in-person instruction will start on Wednesday, with UC Santa Cruz lifting the requirement for uniform emergency remote instruction. Instructors of classes scheduled to meet on Wednesday should email their students with their plans, and students should look for updates from their instructors.
Many students and instructors will remain unable to access the campus, and many members of our community are without power. The Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (CITL) and Online Education have information and resources about instructional strategies for when students or instructors are unable to attend class in person, including Zoom, Lecture Capture, and other asynchronous options. Open office hours with instructional support staff are available for drop-in from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 10–11 a.m. and 2–3 p.m Wednesday for any questions related to instruction.
As previously communicated, instructors have the authority to make emergency temporary instructional adjustments, including the use of the remote modality, as needed to best support learning. Instructors should inform their department chair, program director, or college provost about emergency temporary instructional adjustments. Instructors are encouraged to communicate with students before administratively dropping them from the class, since they may not be attending class due to storm-related conditions.
The National Weather Service is forecasting that Santa Cruz will receive between a quarter and a half inch of rain on Wednesday with a southeast wind between 8 and 13 mph. No rain is expected on Thursday and a 50 percent chance of rain is projected Friday.
The heavy wind and rain have led to challenges across the region due to flooding, downed trees, road closures, and power outages. These impacts have affected faculty, staff, and students. We encourage our community to be patient and flexible as we collectively recover from these severe storms.
Anyone traveling to campus should drive carefully and plan for possible delays.
