Search for Vice Chancellor for Research underway

To: UCSC Community

From: Chancellor Cynthia Larive

I am pleased to announce the kickoff of a national recruitment for Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR). The vice chancellor oversees UC Santa Cruz’s research enterprise including research policy, planning, initiatives, coordination and compliance.

The position is crucially important for our campus, as the VCR works closely with campus leaders and faculty to advance the research mission of the university. The Office of Research provides support services and resources that enhance research and other creative endeavors, fostering partnerships and collaborations with government, industry, and other research enterprises.

Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Lori Kletzer and Distinguished Professor of Physics Steven Ritz are co-chairing the Vice Chancellor for Research Search Advisory Committee. We have retained Storbeck Search, a national executive search firm, to assist us in this recruitment. The committee co-chairs and members of the search firm have been meeting with various campus stakeholder groups to gather their thoughts on campus needs and opportunities, and on the qualifications necessary for the position. Those unable to attend those sessions are encouraged to fill out the survey posted on the Vice Chancellor for Research recruitment webpage. The survey will be open through Jan. 31. The feedback will be shared with the search advisory committee and Storbeck Search.

The application period opens Feb. 1. Applications and nominations will be accepted through March 31, or until the position is filled. We aim to complete the search by the end of the academic year.

I am grateful to John MacMillan, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Development and professor of chemistry and biochemistry, who has served as interim Vice Chancellor for Research since July 2021. He will continue to do so until our new vice chancellor is chosen and takes up the position.

More information on the search can be found on the Vice Chancellor for Research recruitment webpage. If you have specific questions not addressed on the site, please email Senior Leader Human Resources Manager Lauren Morgan at llmorgan@ucsc.edu.

The Vice Chancellor for Research is a key position on our campus. I look forward to your participation and input in this important search.
