Timely Warning Crime Bulletin: Weapons Violation

This Timely Warning crime bulletin is being issued in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act). The purpose is to provide preventative information to the campus community to aid members from becoming the victim of a similar crime.

Summary of the Crime/Incident 

At 6:46 p.m. today, Oct. 17, a UCSC student reported that 30 minutes earlier, an unknown male jumped around the corner of a building near Thimann Lecture Hall and brandished a knife with an approximately 5-7-inch blade. Nothing was demanded of the student, and the student was not physically injured.

Suspect(s) Description

The suspect was described as a clean-shaven White male, possibly in his 20s, with a medium build. He was wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt with an indistinguishable white logo on the left chest area and black jeans.

Community Safety Tips from UC Santa Cruz Police

In response to this incident, the University is providing the following safety information. The tips are general in nature and have no relation to this specific incident.

  • Know where the emergency call boxes are located on campus and learn how to use them.

  • If you are being followed, change direction and go to the nearest business or home; knock on the door, and request that someone call the Police. Note the description of the person following you.

  • Wear clothing and shoes that give you freedom of movement. And don't burden yourself with too many packages or items.

  • Always be aware of your surroundings. If you are wearing headphones, don't turn up the volume so high that you cannot hear outside noises.

  • If you are involved in a heated argument that appears to be turning violent, walk away!
