Launching search for dean of Physical & Biological Sciences

To: UCSC Community

From: Lori Kletzer, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

I am happy to announce the kickoff of a national recruitment for our next dean of the

Division of Physical & Biological Sciences (PBSci), a global engine of high-impact science and student research experiences.

I want to offer my deep gratitude to Dean Paul Koch, who has served as dean since 2011. Paul has accomplished so much throughout his tenure. As just one example, under Paul’s guidance, extramural funding to the Division has grown by 40 percent.

Dean of Social Sciences Katharyne Mitchell and Interim Vice Chancellor for Research John MacMillan will co-chair the search committee. We have retained the executive search firm Storbeck Search to assist in this recruitment.

John, Katharyne and members of the search firm will meet with faculty, staff and students in special stakeholder sessions in October to gather input on the qualifications necessary for a Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences. We aim to have a new dean in place by July 1, 2023.

For more information on the search, visit the Dean of the Physical & Biological Sciences recruitment website. If you have specific questions not addressed on the site, please email Lauren Morgan, our senior leader human resources manager, at llmorgan@ucsc.edu.

This is a very important search for our campus and I look forward to your participation and input.
