Undergraduate Education launching search for Kresge College provost

To: UCSC Community

From: Richard Hughey Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education

The Division of Undergraduate Education is undertaking a search for the next Kresge College Provost.

The new Kresge Provost will be the academic leader of the renewed Kresge College, leading its curriculum and faculty, the academic journey of its students, interdisciplinary faculty collaboration and engagement across campus, and connections with alumni and supporters.

The Kresge Provost joins other college provosts in the Council of Provosts, working on college, colleges-wide, and campus-wide initiatives and issues impacting students, faculty, and alumni. Recent and ongoing projects include the Academic Literacy Curriculum, credit-bearing orientation, strategic planning, and academic integrity.

Kresge College, traditionally a college focused on media studies and media literacy, hosts the curriculum for City on a Hill Press, and regularly collaborates with the departments of Film and Digital Media, Games and Playable Media, the University Library, and Feminist Studies. Kresge’s core course, Power and Representation, surveys narratives of justice in the United States across a range of media, and concludes with "Creative Interventions"—a unit dedicated to fostering student collaboration and thoughtful activism.

Kresge’s programs and student organizations—including the Kresge Parliament, four student cooperatives, and the Common Ground Center—have historically emphasized participatory democracy and consensus-based approaches to building community. The Kresge College staff, student leaders, and faculty strive to cultivate that approach with a rich range of programming and enhancement courses.  Kresge College is also the annual host of a campus PRIDE celebration.

The initial review date for the position is Friday, November 19, 2021. Applications should be sent directly to me at rph@ucsc.edu.

College provosts are key campus scholar-administrators focused on the academic programs of their college, alumni connections, faculty community, and a multitude of other issues.  Provost positions include release from half of their teaching load, a stipend, and summer salary.  This position will begin July 1, 2022 and has a three-year appointment.  Please feel free to contact me, Kresge Provost Ben Carson, or any current or past provost, to discuss this position.

Sincerely,

Richard Hughey

Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education
