Instructors with Household Members at High Risk for COVID

To: UC Santa Cruz instructors

From: Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Lori Kletzer

Dear Campus Colleagues,

In my August 27 guidance I noted that instructors teaching in-person classes in fall quarter ‘21 would not be permitted to change their classes to remote, except under narrow circumstances as a result of the disability accommodation process. As has been previously communicated, if an instructor has a disability that restricts them from teaching in person for fall 2021, they should immediately contact Disability Manager Kelly Roberts (roberts@ucsc.edu) and Director of Academic Employee Relations Danny Gray (dggray@ucsc.edu) in order to initiate the disability accommodation process.

To align with other UC campuses and based on feedback from our own instructor community, I write today to inform you that we have established an additional process where instructors (including GSIs and TAs with instructional responsibilities) may request a modification to their work duties and responsibilities due to a member of their household being moderately to severely immunocompromised. In cases where an instructor has a member of their immediate household who is immunocompromised, such that under the current CDC guidelines they would be eligible for an additional COVID–19 vaccine dose (a “booster”), that instructor may be considered for permission to shift to remote instruction for fall 2021.

In order to receive this consideration, the instructor (or TA/GSI) must submit their request, along with this form, filled out by themselves and their household member’s health care provider, to apo@ucsc.edu as soon as possible. Additionally, the instructor’s department chair (or provost/program director, if applicable) must submit a letter directly to apo@ucsc.edu stating the learning objectives of the course being requested to be shifted to remote, and the chair’s opinion on whether the learning objectives can reasonably be met through a remote modality. It is the instructor’s responsibility to request this letter from their department chair.

Consideration for this category of modification to work duties and responsibilities is currently available only for fall quarter 2021.

Please direct any questions to Danny Gray (dggray@ucsc.edu).

Sincerely,
Lori
