First days of instruction, fall '21

To: UCSC Community

From: Lori Kletzer Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor; David Brundage Professor of History, Senate Chair; Richard Hughey Vice Provost and Dean, Undergraduate Education Interim Vice Provost, Global Engagement; Herbie Lee Vice Provost, Academic Affairs ; Quentin Williams Interim Vice Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies

With the recent University of California announcement of the proposed vaccine mandate for students, staff, faculty and academic appointees, the widespread availability of vaccines, and steadily improving local conditions, we have made the decision to begin in-person instruction at the start of the fall quarter(for most programs, Sept. 23-24, 2021) rather than observing a brief period of remote instruction as announced in March. This decision, which aligns with most University of California campuses, refers only to those courses scheduled for in-person instruction.

Students, staff, faculty and academic appointees should make every effort to be fully vaccinated before arriving on campus. Our Student Health Center is offering vaccination appointments for students and employees.

We wish you all the best as spring quarter concludes. We look forward to returning to campus, and thank you all for your shared commitment to the health and well-being of our UC Santa Cruz community.
