Slug Crossing, a stage-crossing opportunity for graduates, will begin June 11 for the Class of 2021 and on June 13 for the Class 2020.
Graduates of both classes are invited to sign up for a block of time during which they will have their name read, photo taken and the opportunity to cross the commencement stage at an outdoor venue. This event is for students and two guests only — all other family and friends are invited to watch via livestream.
The campus asks that students and guests arrive in the same car, stay together, and follow the required health and safety guidelines.
"I am grateful to everyone involved in supporting this year’s commencement for their hard work and creativity in finding new ways to celebrate our graduates and honor their achievements," Chancellor Cynthia Larive said. "We have faced so many challenges together over the past year and I look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our students!"
Key Deadlines
- The deadline to register in the Slug Cross and/or the virtual ceremonies and celebrations is May 19.
- The deadline to order a cap, gown, and tassel through Herff Jones, (along with announcements, diploma frames, and more) is Friday, May 21 at 8:59 pm PST.
- A volunteer sign-up for faculty and staff interested in helping with the in-person Slug Crossing will be released the week of May 24.
To mitigate against the spread of COVID-19 and protect the well-being of fellow students, as well as staff and volunteers, attendees will be required to wear face coverings (except during the stage crossing and photo) and maintain physical distance. Participants in the stage crossing and guests must fill out a UCSC symptom check prior to and be cleared for campus access. This plan is evolving with a close eye on public health guidance and local, state, and UC health requirements, and may change if requirements change.
