Today will be difficult for many as we honor the life of George Floyd and reflect on the tragedy of his murder one year ago. Our thoughts today are with every person impacted by abuses of power, police violence and anti-Black racism. There is no silver lining to violence, no lesson learned that could ever compensate for the loss of life. As we move forward as individuals and communities, we must do so in ways that honor the memories of those we have lost.
To center and connect us, we ask that you take one minute at 10 a.m. for silent reflection in honor of George Floyd’s life. We ask that instructors, managers, and supervisors respect this time and create space for their classes and meetings to pause. If you are physically alone at that time, know that you are emotionally together with your UC Santa Cruz community in memorial silence.
The impact of the past year is real and profound. So much has been required, even when everyone has so much less to give. Thank you all for continuing to show up for one another and continuing to learn, teach, and work to support our mission while bearing these weights. Thank you, too, for your partnership in the anti-racism efforts on our campus as we work to build a community where everyone can thrive.
If you need support today or at any time, please remember that staff members in our colleges, resource centers, and Counseling and Psychological Services provide assistance for students. Our Employee Assistance Program offers counseling and support to employees.
