Community alert - post-incident advisory

At 2:41 p.m. Tuesday, the UC Santa Cruz Police Department received a request for assistance from the City of Santa Cruz Police Department to block traffic to support its response to a person armed with a firearm in the area of Laurel Drive and California Street in their jurisdiction. It was reported the person pointed a firearm at a victim in a vehicle and made comments regarding self harm. The suspect surrendered and is in the custody of the City of Santa Cruz Police Department.
 
During this incident, the UCSC Police Department increased patrols in the areas where the suspect could have accessed campus and was ready to notify the campus community if the situation created a potential threat to those living or working at UC Santa Cruz. Fortunately, the incident concluded less than three hours later when the suspect surrendered.
