I am delighted that Michael Drake has been named president of the University of California.
The breadth and scope of Dr. Drake’s experience as a university leader, his deep familiarity of the University of California, and his training as a physician will greatly benefit our system. His expertise will be key as we collectively navigate a return to our core missions of education, research and public service in a world that has been greatly changed by COVD-19.
Dr. Drake served as UC Irvine chancellor, as Vice President for Health Affairs for the UC system, and was on the faculty of UC San Francisco for more than two decades. He grew up in Sacramento. He knows California well, and is a passionate advocate for the Golden State and its residents. Importantly, he also knows our challenges. I am excited for the opportunity to work with him as we build on the upward trajectory of our Santa Cruz campus.
I also want to take a moment to thank retiring UC President Janet Napolitano for her strong leadership over the past seven years. She has been a steadfast advocate for California students, helping to stabilize tuition while also expanding access to higher education to thousands of young people, many from traditionally underserved communities. We are a stronger system because of her leadership.
