Quentin Williams to serve as interim graduate studies dean

To: UC Santa Cruz community

From: Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Lori Kletzer

I am pleased to announce that Quentin Williams has agreed to serve as UC Santa Cruz’s interim vice provost and dean of graduate studies. Quentin has served as acting graduate dean since July 2019, when I was asked to serve as interim campus provost and executive vice chancellor.

Quentin brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to the graduate studies role. He is a distinguished professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and a former chair of the department. He has been a faculty member at UC Santa Cruz since 1988, and previously chaired the Santa Cruz division of the Academic Senate, our campus Graduate Council, and the council’s systemwide counterpart, the Coordinating Committee on Graduate Affairs.

I am deeply appreciative of Quentin’s willingness to continue serving the Graduate Division and the campus in this capacity.

I will launch a systemwide search for a permanent vice provost and dean of graduate studies in the fall. Quentin will serve as interim vice provost and dean of graduate studies through June 30, 2021, or until the search yields a successor.
