Campus work crews are planning to burn vegetation piles in and around the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum on Friday, April 10.
Pile burns are tightly controlled and typically produce less smoke than prescribed burns, but smoke may be noticeable close to the Arboretum and on other parts of main campus. Those susceptible to smoke are advised to avoid the immediate area.
Santa Cruz County has not experienced a major wildfire in recent years, but major wildland fires throughout California over the past two years remind us that we must do our part to prevent them. That includes controlling vegetation in and around campus. The pile burns are part of that effort. The Santa Cruz County burn season runs through the end of the month.
