UCOP seeks comments on proposed 'Presidential Policy on Gender Recognition and Lived Name'

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Teresa Maria Linda Scholz, Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Travis S. Becker, Director, Lionel CantĂș Queer Resource Center

The University of California Office of the President invites comments on the proposed Presidential Policy on Gender Recognition and Lived Name.  The policy addresses the following key issues:

  • Providing three equally recognized gender options on university-issued documents and information systems — female, male, and non-binary.
  • Providing an efficient process for students and employees to amend their gender designations and lived names on university-issued documents and in information systems retroactively.
  • The confidentiality of a legal name of university students, employees, alumni, and affiliates, if different than the individual’s lived name.

The Cantú Queer Center is a nexus for support and advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ people at UCSC and maintains  a variety of resources for the campus community. For more information on changing name and gender, please visitqueer.ucsc.edu, dial x 4385, or stop by the Cantú for a visit with the campus’ Trans Education Specialist, Ky Borunda.

In addition, the Campus Registrar offers information on the Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Question page.

The policy is available for review online.

Please submit comments to the Policy Coordination Office at pco@ucsc.edu by close of business May 14, 2020.
