Picketing near main entrance | campus open

To: UC Santa Cruz community

From: Public Affairs

Some UC Santa Cruz graduate students have started an unsanctioned, open-ended labor strike today with picketing and other activities at the main entrance of the residential campus.

Traffic is flowing freely through the main entrance and the west entrance. Motorists should drive carefully and plan for potential delays.

Campus shuttles are operating as scheduled. Some Metro buses are dropping passengers off at the main entrance instead of running their regular routes. Those passengers can take a loop bus up to the campus core.

Updates to campus operations will be posted at ucsc.edu/status, shared on the campus Twitter account, and recorded on the 831-459-INFO phone line. A CruzAlert message will be sent if access to campus is impeded.

UC Santa Cruz graduate students employed as academic student employees are currently represented by the United Autoworkers and under a systemwide contract that was ratified in 2018. This strike is prohibited under their current contract, and it is not sanctioned by their union. UC Santa Cruz has no authority to separately change an already agreed-upon, system-wide labor contract with the UAW
