If you are a current student (undergraduate or graduate), academic, instructor, or staff member from an underrepresented community, you are invited to participate in the Campus Climate Qualitative Research Study (UCSC IRB Protocol #HS3504).
The purpose of the study is to gather a wide range of data related to campus climate, diversity efforts and inclusive practices, and work-life concerns so that campus leadership is better informed about the quality of living and working environments for students, faculty, and staff from underrepresented communities on campus.
Based on the findings, campus leadership will develop action plans and strategic initiatives to improve the overall campus climate. The manner in which the term “underrepresented communities” is being used is akin to UCSF’s definition of underrepresented minority (URM), as someone whose racial or ethnic makeup is from one of the following:
- African American / Black / Caribbean / African (ABC)
- Asian: Filipino, Hmong, or Vietnamese only
- Hispanic / Latinx
- Native American / Alaskan Native
- Native Hawaiian / Other Pacific Islander
- Two or more races, when one or more are from the preceding racial and ethnic categories in this list
We recognize that you have intersectional identities. For the purpose of the study, you will select the scheduled focus group that you find to be most appropriate. We will be taking into account intersectionality in the study.

- 18 years or older
- Current student, faculty, or staff member at UC Santa Cruz
- Self-identify as an underrepresented minority
Participants will only be asked to attend one session that lasts approximately one and one-half hours. Focus groups will be arranged so that participants are grouped into student and employee classifications (e.g., undergraduate students, grad students; full-time faculty and part-time faculty; exempt and non- exempt staff).
Participants will be notified of the location when they RSVP for a scheduled group.

Participation is voluntary. For the sake of privacy, participants will not be asked to provide any identification (e.g., school ID, driver’s license, passport) to participate in the study.
