Campus statement on Poway Synagogue

Our campus community is horrified by news of yet another hateful and deadly act against the Jewish community, this time at the Poway Synagogue. Our hearts go out to our students who have been members of the San Diego synagogue, as they had friends and family who were present during the shooting.

As campus leaders, we’d like to be in a world where such violence is found in history books, not news headlines. Unfortunately, these acts of hate continue--locally, nationally, and internationally. It is during these times that we need to join together as a campus to live our Principles of Community and support one another. Following, are a few events that you can attend for and to show support:

Today (Monday April 29th) 3–4 p.m.: A memorial at the Quarry.

Wednesday May 1st, 10 a.m. to noon: Rabbi Eli Cohen of local synagogue, Chadeish Yameinu, will be available for conversation and reflecting at Iveta Cafe.

Friday May 3rd, 6 p.m.: Unity Shabbat with Chabad at Santa Cruz Hillel (all are welcome).

Thursday, May 9, 7 p.m.: The Humanities Institute and the Center for Jewish Studies will present UC Santa Cruz Night at the Museum: Anti-Semitism & the Internet—Old Hatred and New, at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View.

Sad and shocking news can be difficult to process. We encourage students who wish to speak with someone to contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 831-459-2628. Faculty and staff may wish to use the Employee Assistance Program.
