Active Learning Classroom earns LEED gold

The Active Learning Classroom in the Science and Engineering Library has earned a gold LEED Commercial Interior rating.

While several campus buildings have garnered LEED certification, this is the first interior project to earn this distinction.

The project earned high marks for its optimized HVAC system, enhanced lighting system, being accessible through public transportation, and for using low-emission materials.

"Along with the traditional benefits of green building like resource use reduction, it's exciting to see UCSC invest in LEED buildings because of their proven improvement to human health," said Ellen Vaughan, water and climate action manager. " Studies are finding exciting gains in overall health of office workers that enhance morale and reduce stress due to increased daylighting, better indoor air quality, and other procurement decisions that avoid chemicals."
