Last night, a gunman opened fire at the Garlic Festival in Gilroy. Three people have died and a dozen more are being treated for their injuries. The gunman was killed by police.
We are stunned and horrified by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the victims and their family and friends, the Gilroy community, and those in our own community who have been impacted by this terrible act of violence.
In these difficult moments, we must find strength and support from one another. The UC Santa Cruz community mourns the senseless loss of life and all the lives that will never be the same.
We must also speak out, particularly against gun violence and the shockwaves it sends through our community. Violence is at odds with our campus values, and we condemn this hate-filled act.
We urge anyone impacted by this incident, directly or indirectly, to use our resources. In addition to support services offered by staff in our colleges, Counseling and Psychological Services provides assistance for students.
For employees, the Employee Assistance Program can provide counseling and support.
