Cal Fire has advised campus officials that state fire crews will conduct a 12-acre prescribed burn near the intersection of Empire Grade and Jamison Creek Road between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Cal Fire does not expect smoke to be detected by those at the main campus. However, people in the nearby area may notice smoke during and after the burn.
The project is being conducted in accordance with a Smoke Management Permit issued by the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District in order to minimize the smoke impacts on surrounding communities.
The burn is being conducted as part of Cal Fire's Vegetation Management Program and is intended to reduce fuel accumulations and restore and enhance grassland. Prescribed vegetation management burns are carefully planned controlled burns that must meet a predefined set of conditions in order to achieve ideal fire behavior.
