6:20 p.m.—Today’s labor action by AFSCME and UPTE workers and their supporters has concluded. Campus Metro service, which had been limited to stops at the base of campus, has now resumed regular operations.

Campus is returning to regular operations with dining halls operating on their published schedules and campus shuttles resuming normal routes.

Today’s labor action unfolded peacefully for striking workers and their supporters, as well as for those entering and exiting campus. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation.

5 p.m.—The campus is open, and traffic is flowing freely at both entrances to main campus. Please watch for pedestrians, as there is labor activity.

3:58 p.m.—The main and west entrances to campus are open and traffic is flowing freely. Please watch for pedestrians, as labor activity continues near the main entrance.

3 p.m.—Both entrances remain open with picketers at the main entrance. Drive cautiously and watch for pedestrians. 

2 p.m.—The campus is open, and traffic is flowing freely at both entrances to main campus. Please watch for pedestrians, as there is labor activity.

1 p.m.—Both campus entrances are open. Please watch for pedestrians, as there are demonstrators near the main entrance.

Noon—The main and west entrances to campus are open and traffic is flowing freely. Please watch for pedestrians, as labor activity continues near the main entrance.

As a reminder, three dining halls are open today: Colleges Nine & Ten, Cowell/Stevenson, Rachel Carson/Oakes. Also, most independently-operated food spots on campus are open: Global Village Cafe (8 a.m.-5 p.m), Cowell Coffee Shop: For The People (8 a.m.-8 p.m.), Bowls by Cafe Brasil (9 a.m.-9 p.m.), Bay Tree Express Store (7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.), Ivéta Cafe (9 a.m.-7 p.m.)

All UCSC Dining operated cafes, restaurants and coffee bars, as well as Vivas, and the Crown/Merrill and Porter/Kresge dining halls, are closed. 

11 a.m.—Both campus entrances are open and traffic is flowing freely on and off of campus. Please watch for pedestrians, as labor activity continues near the main entrance.

10:15 a.m.—Both entrances to main campus are open. Please watch for pedestrians near the campus entrances, as labor activity continues.  

9:20 a.m.—Most independently-operated food spots on campus are open: Global Village Cafe (8 a.m.-5 p.m), Cowell Coffee Shop: For The People (8 a.m.-8 p.m.), Bowls by Cafe Brasil (9 a.m.-9 p.m.), Bay Tree Express Store (7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.), Ivéta Cafe (9 a.m.-7 p.m.)

Metro buses are not entering campus. Buses are dropping passengers at the Bay/High intersection, then  heading down Western to continue on their scheduled routes. On campus, there is limited shuttle and courtesy van service. 

8:30 a.m.—The entrances to main campus are clear, and traffic is flowing. Motorists should watch for pedestrians, as labor activity continues near the main entrance. 

Admissions service at Cook House and Hahn will be open normal hours.

8 a.m.—Both entrances to main campus are open. Please watch for pedestrians near the entrances, as labor activity continues. 

7:55 a.m.—Early Education Services are fully operational.

7:45 a.m.—Metro routes serving campus are detouring around the Bay/High intersection, dropping off at the base of campus and laying-over on Meder and Cardiff streets to continue on their scheduled routes. On campus, limited general transit and courtesy vans operating.

Student Health Services is open during the strike, but will have limited services. 

7:30 a.m.—The entrances to main campus are open. Please watch for pedestrians, as labor activity continues at the base of campus. 

7 a.m.—Both entrances to main campus are open. Please allow extra time when traveling to campus, given possible traffic congestion due to labor activity. 

6:55 a.m.—The Wellness Center, Team Lockers rooms, and West Field House will be open regular hours, while the rest of the East Facility including the pool will be closed. 

6:50 a.m.—Science & Engineering and McHenry libraries will be open normal hours. Global Village Cafe will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Background

The University of California has been informed that there will be a labor strike on all of its campuses and medical centers on Thursday, May 16, beginning at midnight and going through 11:59 p.m. The strike will include employees in represented by AFSCME Service (SX), Patient Care Technical (EX), and Skilled Trades (K7) and UPTE Research Support Professional (RX), Technical (TX), and Health Care Professional (HX).
