Cal Fire has advised campus officials that state fire crews next week will again burn vegetation piles they have assembled near campus.
The piles are on both sides of Empire Grade, north of Twin Gates. Smoke is not expected to be noticeable on main campus, though it will likely be evident on north campus. Pile burns are tightly controlled and typically produce less smoke than prescribed burns. However, persons susceptible to smoke are advised to avoid the area.
Cal Fire officials report that crews are making good progress on the burns, and aim to wrap them up over the next week or so.
The pile burns are part of an effort to control vegetation on and around campus, which reduces fire risk. For more wildland fire information including campus prevention efforts, visit the UC Santa Cruz wildland fire resource page.
