Psychology Professor Margarita Azmitia has received a mentorship award from the Spencer Foundation. The award was announced April 6 during the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association meeting in Toronto, Canada.
Azmitia is one of only three mentors selected to receive the honor from among 100 individuals who were nominated. She was nominated for the award, which is accompanied by a $25,000 cash prize, by Professor Emerita Catherine Cooper. The funds will be used to support Azmitia's mentoring work in the field of education research.
A developmental psychologist, Azmitia conducts research on first-generation and underrepresented college students. The Spencer Foundation has supported Azmitia's work, including a longitudinal study of the experiences, supports, and barriers associated with the graduation of first-gen college students, as well as a study of the academic mentorship provided by Mexican-descent students to their younger siblings.
