Campus services during Wednesday's strike

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Public Affairs

As previously shared, UC Santa Cruz and the other UC campuses will have several labor unions on strike, which is expected last from 4 a.m. Wednesday to 3:59 a.m. Thursday.

Though we do not know how these strike activities will impact the operation of our campus, the campus is working to do everything it can to ensure services continue.

Final examinations

The campus expects to hold all exams, review sessions, classes, discussion sections/labs, and office hours as normal.

Students with finals scheduled for Wednesday should be in communication with their instructor about contingency plans, in the event that campus is inaccessible.

It is strongly recommended that everyone allow for additional time to get to their destination, given that transportation service is an area that will be impacted.

Transportation

TAPS will give highest priority to providing Disability Van Service (DVS) clients transport between on-campus locations while suspending the Bike Shuttle and regular Loop and Upper Campus shuttle services.

Depending on the number of drivers that report to work, TAPS may be able to run a minimal level of shuttle service, and a limited number of smaller, volunteer-based vehicles will be on-hand to supplement this service. Other options include Lyft, Uber, Zipcars, JUMP bikes, providing or sharing a ride with a friend or connecting with someone through Zimride, biking, or walking when able.

Those planning to use Lyft, Uber, Zipcars, JUMP Bikes, or Zimrides should sign-up for the service in advance. Additionally, Lyft and Uber rides should be arranged ahead of time, when possible.

We anticipate that METRO routes serving the campus will drop passengers off at the base of campus only and will then detour around the Bay/High intersection, with buses laying-over on Meder and Cardiff streets to maintain their regular service schedules.

Dining

Provided sufficient staffing is available, up to three dining halls will be open during the strike; however, dining hall hours will be limited from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the types of prepared food available will be limited as well. We also anticipate that all cafes and restaurants operated by UC Santa Cruz Dining may be closed.

Stay informed

The campus will provide real-time updates beginning early Wednesday at ucsc.edu/status. Information will also be shared through 459-INFO and on Twitter at twitter.com/ucsc. CruzAlerts may also be used when appropriate.
