NSF honors astronomer Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz among Hispanic leaders in science
In recognition of their efforts and Hispanic Heritage Month, the National Science Foundation profiled eight leaders in their fields.
For Hispanic Heritage Month, the National Science Foundation (NSF) recognized Hispanic scientists and engineers at the forefront of U.S. research, including Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, professor and chair of astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz.
Ramirez-Ruiz is among eight Hispanic leaders in science profiled by NSF in an article published October 15 in Medium. The article recognizes his accomplishments as a theoretical astrophysicist as well as his work as director of the Lamat program and other efforts to support the promotion and retention of women and underrepresented minorities in STEM fields.
A fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, Ramirez-Ruiz has received numerous awards and honors, including a Packard Fellowship, a Radcliffe Fellowship, a Niels Bohr Professorship from the Danish National Research Foundation, and the 2017 Edward A. Bouchet Award from the APS.
