Forest health and fuel reduction project in Upper Campus

A 12-acre forest health and fuel reduction project will be taking place on the UCSC Upper Campus near the Antenna Site north of East Road from Monday, August 17, 2026 through Friday, September 18, 2026. While the project is occurring, expect delays and temporary closures of fire roads and ad-hoc single-track trails in the project area. Crews will not be working weekends.
The project is a vegetation management project conducted under the Wildfire Vegetation Management Plan and is funded by a CalFire Forest Health Grant. The purpose of the project is to manage dead and dying material in the forest understory, create space for the redwood trees in the project area to grow to larger sizes, and protect hardwoods like oak and madrone from encroachment and overtopping. The project is CEQA Compliant through a California Vegetation Treatment Program (CalVTP)Project Specific Analysis Environmental Impact Report Addendum.
